Award-winning author Sylvia Meléndez Klinger, MS, RD, LDN, CPT is founder of Hispanic Food Communications, Inc, a nutrition and food communications consulting company.
Sylvia is an Hispanic native who is a leading expert in cross-cultural Hispanic nutrition and health issues. Sylvia has an impressive record and knowledge of Hispanic foods and culture, enhanced by continued education in current nutritional research and frequent immersion in Hispanic communities. She uses her in-depth culinary and cultural expertise to introduce new strategies for wellness to an increasingly health-conscious population.
Sylvia has been a sought after consultant for global food, beverage, and pharmaceutical companies and non-profit organizations. She is a primary resource for news media for her timely expert commentary on nutrition issues and research.
Sylvia serves on several boards, including the Grain Foods Foundation Advisory Board, Kellogg’s Breakfast Council and the FAMA Center for Family Caregivers Board. Sylvia has been a visiting Adjunct professor at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Tirgu Mures in Romania, teaching clinical nutrition therapy.
She is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and past chair of the Latino Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition network group (LAHIDAN).
Sylvia was awarded Outstanding Dietitian of 2009 by the Illinois Dietetic Association – West Suburban Chapter. In 2012, she received The Distinguished Alumna 2012 from Loma Linda School of Allied Health Professions – Nutrition and Dietetics, and the 2012 Rincon Family Services Care Award. Most recently, Sylvia received the 2013 Prominent Business Woman of the Year Award from La Raza newspaper in Chicago.
She co-authored a recent award-winning publication, the Hispanic Family Nutrition Counseling Kit, which was published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in December 2015. Other publications include “The Role of Breakfast in Health: Definition and Criteria for a Quality Breakfast”, published by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in December 2014, and “A Systematic Review of the Relationship between Acculturation and Diet among Latinos in the United States: Implications for Future Research”, published by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in August 2008. Sylvia also co-authored “The alli Cookbook: More than 200 ALL-NEW Recipes and Meal Plans” (Meredith Books) in 2007.
Sylvia earned a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics and nutrition from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California and her Master of Science in public administration from DePaul University in Chicago.
Kate M. Brogan
Marketing & Operations
Since 2006, Kate has worked with Sylvia Klinger at Hispanic Food Communications to deliver consumer-friendly information about nutrition and wellness. Kate and Sylvia co-authored “Hispanic Family Nutrition,” a training guide for dietitians to be published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Fall 2015.
Prior to joining Hispanic Food Communications, Kate worked in account management for a healthcare advertising agency and in marketing for Accenture. She founded Madison Elm Communications LLC, a marketing communications firm serving small to mid-size companies in consulting, technology and financial services.
Kate earned her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and her BBA in Marketing from the University of Notre Dame.
Nancy E. O’Brien, CPA
Nancy O’Brien joined Hispanic Food Communications in 2012 to manage the company finances and billing. Prior to joining HFC, Nancy worked with FMC Technologies as its director of internal audit (worldwide) and manager of accounting research. She also was a senior manager in audit at Price Waterhouse LLP. Nancy is an active volunteer with several not-for-profit and church organizations in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Nancy earned her BS in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
